<image:caption>pomaque ab insomni concustodita dracone. ‘and the fruit guarded by the sleepless dragon.' CITRUS LIMONIMEDICA Watercolour on paper, framed with red Italian marble paper. (9"x 11") A verse from the Roman poet Ovid's Metamorphoses Book 9, which speaks of the dragon that guards the divine fruit in the garden of the Hesperides. In the spirit of Hercules, who once stole the golden fruit that grew in the goddesses' garden, this golden lemon was plucked from the gardens of the D’Este Villa in Tivoli. Cardinal Ippolito II D’Este had envisioned the villa's garden as his very own paradise garden of the Hesperides and there are various references to Hercules entwined in it, as the hero was reputed to be a protector of the Tiburtine region, where the villa is located and an ancestor of the D’Este family, whose motto is a variation on Ovid's line: ab insomni non custodita dracone.</image:caption>

<image:caption>sape aliquid melius paradisio. ‘Know/ Taste something better than Paradise.’ CITRUS LIMON PERETTA Watercolour on paper, framed with red Italian marble paper. (13"x 17") The words are based on a remark made by Cesare Borgia, who said that ‘in the Garden of Eden, Eve showed more courage than Adam, when the serpent offered her the forbidden fruit. She knew that there was something better than paradise.’ This Renaissance rogue of a citrus fruit with lovely locks of leaves, is a pear shaped variety cultivated by the Medici in the 17th century. The Latin verb sapere means ‘to taste/ savour something’ but also ‘to know something’.</image:caption>

(13"x 17") A quote from Cosimo de Medici, who believed that a family tree could remain strong despite one mishap or loss of a single stem. Similarly, though fallen from paradise, the human race thrived despite one rebellious ‘branch’ (Adam and Eve) breaking away. The Latin word stirps means both 'a stem or offshoot of a tree' and also extends its meaning metaphorically to the brach of a family: the offspring or progeny of a race. This rare citrus variety was spotted growing in the Medici's Limonaia in the Boboli Gardens of Firenze, Italy.</image:caption>

<image:caption>quid velit et possit rerum concordia discors. 'What purpose and what power has nature's harmonious discord.’ CITRUS LIMONIMEDICA FLORENTINA Watercolour on paper, framed with red Italian marble paper. (13"x 17") An extract from the Roman poet Horace's Epistles (65BCE- 8CE). Horace is referencing the idea of concordia discors proposed by the Greek philosopher Empedocles, who believed that universal harmony is shaped by the perpetual strife between the four elements of nature (fire, air, water and earth) ordered by love into a jarring unity, or, as the musical metaphor held it, a 'discordant harmony'.</image:caption>

<image:caption>et in Arcadia ego. ‘Even in Arcadia am I.' CITRON DE MENTON Watercolour on paper, silver gilt frame and Italian marble paper. (17"x 17") This Citrus Limon was plucked from Eve’s newfound garden of Paradise in Menton. No other lemon grows as far north, thriving only because of Menton’s temperate micro-climate created by its proximity to the coast and sheltered by the mountains; not dissimilar to the pastoral paradise of Arcadia described in Greek mythology.</image:caption>

'Surely you know that bitter lemon, marked by your teeth, where the vanquished dragon's ancient seed sleeps?' POMO D' ADAMO SPINOSO Watercolour on paper, silver gilt frame and Italian marble paper. (21”x 17”) Gérard de Nerval (1808-1855) wrote twelve famous sonnets Les Chimères, from which this line is taken from one titled Delfica. It references a visit to the Temple of Isis at Pompeii with an English girl, named Octavia, who tasted the lemon there. The ancient dragon, Ladon, guarded the fruit trees in the garden of the Hesperides in Greek mythology.</image:caption>

(9”x 11”) Found in the grounds of the Jardin d'agrumes du Palais Carnolès (the Prince of Monaco’s garden devoted to citrus trees) in Menton, France, this little lemon had fallen before its time, but spotted and forever preserved in paint: its fall thus became a new beginning. The quote is a line from Vergil’s Georgics (his poetic treatise on farming and rural life).</image:caption>

<image:caption>sapientia pluris auro est. ‘Wisdom is worth more than gold.’ CITRUS LIMON FEMMINELLO SORRENTINO Watercolour on paper, gilt frame and Italian marble paper. (17”x 13”) A pair of Limoni di Sorrento, the most significant lemon group grown in Italy. The Latin word sapientia ‘good taste’ or ‘wisdom’ is etymologically rooted in the verb sapio/ sapire: 'to taste' or 'have good taste' and thus 'to have wisdom'. Surely this is a fruit straight from the tree of knowledge?</image:caption>

CITRUS LIMON SFUSATO DI SORRENTO Watercolour on paper, gilt frame and Italian marble paper. (13”x 17”) 'The golden mean' is a philosophical concept that the Roman poet Horace (65BCE- 8CE) advocates in his Odes as the way to live content. Extremes bring only discontent, bliss lies in the middle: find 'a happy mean'.</image:caption>

'Love unites anew ancient origins and from halves makes a whole to heal the human soul.' CITRUS LIMON FEMMINELLO ADAMO Watercolour on paper, gilt frame and Italian marble paper. (17”x 20”) A translation of the speech given in Greek by the playwright Aristophanes, as recorded in Plato’s Symposium, where he speaks of love as the force that reunites us with the other half of our original soul. As punishment for man's misbehaviour, the god Zeus halved each human, dividing one soul between two bodies and so we yearn to find that other part of our being, our soulmate, to feel whole once more.</image:caption>

<image:title>Exhibitions - ‘Lost Legends and Found Lemons’ - I MIEI PALADINI / PUPI IN CERAMICA</image:title>
<image:caption>Ceramic Marionettes Above: miniature marionettes (approximately 18cm tall). Below: large marionettes (approximately 44cm tall). The puppet theatres of Sicily (Opera dei Pupi) emerged in the 19th century, but their origin may be traced back to the Greek marionettists around during the time of Socrates and Xenophon in the 5th century BCE from the evidence of rod marionettes in ancient Syracuse. Traditionally, the pupi are crafted from wood, decorated with realistic metal armour and take to the stage to reenact episodes from medieval chivalric literature and epic Italian Renaissance poems, like The Song of Roland or Orlando furioso, as well as stories from the classical world of ancient Greece and Rome. For the poor Sicilian audience, these legends represented more than an escapist world; the pupi personified the hopes, struggles, victories and defeats in their own lives. They became an atemporal picture of daily life, of friends and enemies, of loyalty and treachery, of ingratitude and injustice of those in power. Also captivated by the lively performance in Palermo from one of Sicily’s oldest family run companies and, in honour of this tradition, I created my own articulated pupi in ceramic. Collectivly they can stage Proserpina’s story; to accompany Persephone, as was the tradition for unmarried maidens in classical times, are her handmaidens ( the καρπος-φορος, or ‘fruit-bearers’). These attendants personify the fecundity of Sicily and Proserpina’s mother, Ceres, as the goddess of fertility and the harvest. They also anticipate Proserpina’s future role as the goddess who brings the spring and with it the new fruits.</image:caption>

<image:caption>9cm tall with a 9cm aperture. The vase was inspired by a series of early 2nd century BCE vessels painted with the same striking pink tones as the votive statues of Proserpina. One such nuptial vase, that would have been used in a marriage ceremony, was decorated with a scene in homage to a bride and with floral motifs in relief. This Centuripe ware style is here used to create a vase celebrating the marriage of Proserpina and Pluto, embellished with the goddess’s springtime florals and vibrant colours. <image:title>Exhibitions - ‘Lost Legends and Found Lemons’</image:title>
<image:caption>The antique stool is painted by hand in the manner of Carretto Siciliano: a highly ornate and colourful style of decorating donkey drawn carts indigenous to the island of Sicily. Each province has its own unique style and they are often brought out for wedding ceremonies. The spoked wheel carts, originally introduced to the island by the ancient Greeks, are covered in carvings and brightly painted scenes from Sicilian history and folklore. The designs incorporate elements from Classical mythology, Christianity, tales of war and love or scenes from rustic life, Medieval Italian legends and local mysticism. Sicilian art and culture is a unique blend that has evolved out of the numerous civilisations, from the Phoenicians, the Greeks, the Romans, to the Turks, the Bourbons, the Arabs, the Normans and the Spanish. The battles of king Charlemagne and his Paladin Knights remain the most popular theme on the carts and for performances at the Opera dei Pupi. The stool follows the painting style found in south-east Sicily, where the colour scheme is dominated by a crimson red background with the addition of yellow ochre (the colours of Sicily’s flag), cerulean blue and emerald green foliate patterns. The body is historiated with Baroque inspired motifs, such as the phoenix which is a symbol of resurrection and transformation. In the 16th century Italian epic poem Orlando Furioso by Ludovico Ariosto, which recants the legends of Charlemagne and his knights, the mightiest female knight, named Marfisa, also bore the phoenix as her emblem. The manula (almond shape) on the top is filled with Sicilian lemons, oranges and the pomegranate, which reoccur in vignettes on the legs to celebrate the richness of this volcanic land nurtured by Mount Etna.</image:caption>

French crusader knights were known to woo a lady by gifting her a lemon pierced with cloves, as both were seen as highly expensive goods at the time. The poem behind the portrait ‘Here eternal flowers sigh with a sweeter Zephyr, which your blossom-bearing Henna never grew, and therewithal is a bountiful tree in a dappled grove, its bowing boughs resplendent with living ore: this is consecrated to you. For you shall be queen of the blessed autumn and shall ever be enriched with golden fruits.’ From De Raptu Proserpinae by Claudian Claudianus: Zephyris illic melioribus halant perpetui flores, quos nec tua protulit Henna, est etiam lucis arbor praedives opacis fulgentes viridi ramos curvata metallo : haec tibi sacra datur fortunatumque tenebis autumnum et fulvis semper ditabere pomis.</image:caption>

<image:caption>‘A Triad of Golden Graces’ Watercolour on paper. 8" x 12" Three 'citrus limon Feminello': one of the first varieties of lemon introduced to Italy and named for their protruding nipples and ample form. Grown by the Medici family in their gardens from the 16th century, it fruits all year round with royal purple buds that blossom into exceptionally fragrant flowers. The three Graces: Aglaea ('Splendor'), Euphrosyne ('Joy') and Thalia ('Plentiful'), were the goddesses of all things joyful and beautiful, patrons of the arts and festivities. The ribbon bears the inscription: Per vos omne delectabile dulceque mortalibus perficitur. ‘Through thy favour every joy and sweet delight makes rich the mortal soul.’ Translated from Pindar’s Olympian Ode XIV (488 BCE), which was chosen in honour of the forthcoming 2024 Olympics, since Pindar composed the odes to celebrate the victors at the Ancient Olympic games.</image:caption>
